How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: 7 Fixes That Work

Nobody can guarantee an AI answer names your brand. What we can do is remove the reasons engines ignore you — most of which are mechanical, cheap to fix, and shockingly common. Here are the seven fixes, in rough order of impact. Each one is verifiable with a free check.

1. Stop blocking GPTBot by accident

The #1 issue we find is self-inflicted: a robots.txt line inherited from a template, or a CDN's bot protection quietly 403-ing AI crawlers. Check what your robots.txt actually says for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and CCBot. If you blocked them in 2023 out of caution, decide again — blocking the engines you want cited is cutting your own phone line.

2. Make your homepage readable without JavaScript

Fetch your homepage with JS disabled. What remains is roughly what a language model sees. If the answer is "a spinner and an empty div," your beautifully-designed SPA is a locked room. Fix: server-render the value proposition, or at minimum put a real <noscript> summary in the HTML.

3. Say what you do in one plain sentence

Models match concepts to phrases. "The operating system for modern revenue teams" is poetry; "invoicing software for freelancers" is retrieval. Put the plain version in your title tag, your H1, and your first paragraph. If a stranger can't finish the sentence "this site is for ___ who want ___" after 5 seconds on your homepage, neither can a model.

4. Ship a valid llms.txt

A Markdown file at your root that names your site and lists your key pages. It's a community spec, engine support varies (details in our guide), but it costs ten minutes and it standardizes information engines otherwise guess. Our generator makes it a copy-paste job.

5. Get mentioned where AI engines already read

Training data and retrieval corpora are full of directories, "best X for Y" lists, "alternatives to Z" posts, and Reddit threads. When someone asks a model for recommendations in your category, the names in those sources dominate. Pick the 3 that matter for your niche and get listed — this is slow, manual, and disproportionately effective.

6. Structure content as direct answers

Pages that answer questions get quoted. Pose the question in an H2, answer it in the first sentence, then elaborate. Sequential heading levels, one H1, schema.org for facts (price, ratings, FAQs). This is also just good writing, which is the point — models reward what readers reward.

7. Measure it — or you're guessing

Ask the same 3–5 questions your buyers ask and see whether your brand appears. Do it monthly, after each fix. That's exactly what our checker does — run it free on your domain and get the crawl matrix, structure audit, and mention tests in one report.

These fixes remove the technical reasons you'd be ignored. Whether an engine cites you also depends on how mentionable you are — and nobody can promise citations. Anyone who does is selling you something.
